Christian books on Hoopla

My summer sewing project - EPP hexies.
These are sitting in a magnolia tree in GA.

Summertime and books go hand-in-hand. Whether traveling or at home, often there are a few more hours during summer weeks to dive into some good reading. I'm especially thankful for my Kindle for portable reading.

Sometimes, though, listening to a book works better than reading a print copy. A good audio book makes a great companion while folding laundry or organizing closet shelves, cooking dinner or sewing. During this past year I've been surprised to find a wealth of free Christian audio and electronic books on Hoopla.

Hoopla Digital, for those not familiar with it, is a web or mobile app that many public libraries partner with to provide digital content including e- and audio-books. Here's a map that shows which libraries have agreements with Hoopla. One of the things I like about Hoopla vs. Overdrive, which our library also uses, is that with Hoopla books are immediately available, and if I haven't had time to finish it, I simply check it out again, and the book opens to the place I left off. Even better was discovering the rich treasure trove of good Christian books available via Hoopla!

During the past school year my youngest sons and I listened to several books on Hoopla together during breakfast. Some of the ones we enjoyed are The Cross and the Switchblade, Charles Colson's Born Again, and Eric Metaxes' biography of Dietrich Bonhoeffer. Our breakfast and book time was so successful, we'll be doing that again, maybe taking in John Piper's Don't Waste Your Life, God's Smuggler by Brother Andrew, and The Autobiography of George Muller.

Here are some of the Christian authors Hoopla's catalog contains: (A large number of these books are audio, but there are plenty of e-books as well.)

  • Augustine (Confessions)
  • John Bunyan (Numerous audio versions of Pilgrim's Progress + others)
  • Jeremiah Burroughs (The Rare Jewel of Christian Contentment)
  • Rosaria (Champagne) Butterfield (Secret Thoughts of an Unlikely Convert + others)
  • Jonathan Edwards (The Life of David Brainerd)
  • Elisabeth Elliot (Through Gates of Splendor + others)
  • Rosalind Goforth (How I Know God Answers Prayer) - great little book by this missionary to China
  • C. S. Lewis
  • John Piper
  • Charles Spurgeon
  • Howard Taylor (Hudson Taylor's Spiritual Secret) - excellent!
  • Corrie ten Boom (The Hiding Place)
  • Thomas Watson
  • Jen Wilkin (Women of the Word)
  • Nancy Demoss Wolgemuth (Lies Women Believe + more)
  • Christian Heroes Then and Now - Series for children includes volumes on Hudson Taylor, Geroge Muller, and many, many others.

Hurrah for Hoopla for making so many faith-building books available to their member libraries!
